Weekend 9/2 Treble | Jack Wright
Weekend 9/2 Treble | Jack Wright
A 2-1 win at promotion hopefuls Watford in their last Championship fixture ended a three-game winless wobble from the Blades to re-ignite their automatic promotion hopes. Prior to that Chris Wilder’s men had won nine of an 11 game unbeaten run in the league. Bramall Lane has been a fortress during the current campaign yielding nine wins and just one defeat from their 12 outings on home soil.
The Canaries must do without Championship top-scorer Borja Sainz as he serves the second of a six-game suspension. They looked toothless in his absence as they crashed out of the FA Cup last weekend at home to Brighton. To impact their chances further key playmaker Marcelino Nunez was forced off against the Seagulls with a hamstring injury and is set for another spell in the treatment room. The hosts, who have kept nine clean sheets at home, will have too much strength in both boxes and are taken to get the job done in an efficient if not spectacular fashion.
It is possible the FA Cup weekend came at the wrong time for Bristol Rovers. Having managed just one win in 14 games across all competitions the Gas bagged a massive win against relegation rivals Cambridge. That run led to manager Matt Taylor losing his job with successor Iñigo Calderón also losing his first two games in charge before the victory at the second bottom U’s. Rovers were easily dispatched 3-0 by Ipswich in the FA Cup and now must face an in-form Barnsley side.
The Tykes had a superb end to 2024 winning three of their last four games. On New Years Day they handed promotion chasing Wrexham their only defeat in 11 games then followed that up with victory over Crawley. With bad weather meaning that was their last competitive action Darrell Clarke will have his men ready and in prime condition to cement their position in the play-off places. Currently in fifth they will certainly not be ruling out a tilt at the automatic places and that means taking three points home from the Memorial Stadium is a must.
Leganes sit in 16th place just three points above the relegation zone and it is their home form that is particularly concerning. They have managed just eight goals in nine home games while shipping 15, and their recent defensive collapses conceding 11 goals in their last three home matches. Simeone's men arrive in sensational form, riding a 15-game winning streak across all competitions. Their tactical evolution this season has been incredible, no longer just defensive specialists but now boasting a highly efficient attack.
Borja Jiménez has seen his side play five of the current top 10 on home soil this term and lose all five games scoring twice but leaking an alarming 14 goals. The visitors have a strong road record, but it is made all the better when you consider they have faced seven of the top 10 with 12th placed Celta Vigo the lowest side they have travelled to. A nine-game unbeaten head-to-head record further adds to the confidence in Atletico here who can add a fourth win in the last five meetings by completing a seasonal double over their opponents.
