Stephen Harris’ Saturday Racing Tips at Newmarket and Redcar

Ralph Beckett has enjoyed a terrific few months, with a succession of well backed winners and a strike rate of over 20pc (including ten in the last fortnight). His scopey and highly regarded filly impressed when routing her rivals at Pontefract in June, and now starts off into handicaps from an attractive opening mark after an expensive defeat back at the same venue last time out (trapped out wide throughout).

Rossa Ryan is booked for the ride, and the step up to seven furlongs on fast summer ground should suit ideally.

Micky Hammond’s handicapper has been catching the eye in defeat in recent months and has now been given a chance by the assessor by easing his mark down to a very winnable level. The faster ground expected at Redcar should suit ideally, and a much more positive ride could see him in a different light against some largely opposable northern rivals.

He struggled to go the pace at York last time out in stronger company on fast ground (running on strongly late from a poor position), but this looks a lot easier under the talented 3lb claimer Aiden Brookes.

Tom Clover’s unexposed handicapper disappointed in a competitive field at this track last time out when a well backed favourite but had looked a promising performer in the making before that effort and should appreciate some relatively calmer waters back at Newmarket on Saturday. The booking of Oisin Murphy increases confidence, and the likely strong gallop at the head of affairs should set things up ideally for a late charge.

He remains open to improvement after just three career starts on the turf, and the drop back to a fast run seven furlongs looks the right call (did too much too soon over a mile last time).
