Kevin Ryan has hit a real purple patch of form with seven winners in the last fortnight, and his useful handicapper caught the eye when finishing a never dangerous fifth at Ayr last time out (running on strongly inside the final furlong having been given an awful lot to do by Connor Murtagh).

He now steps up to one mile 2 furlong for the first time in a 31-race career, and the increased emphasis on stamina is expected to suit with the reliable Tom Eaves taking over in the saddle.

James Ferguson is very much a young trainer well worth following over the next few seasons, and his unexposed handicapper is fancied to defy a new mark for winning at Lingfield last month. He landed a hefty punt there on the fast ground on his first start since undergoing a gelding operation and remains with plenty of upside in this sphere after just two career starts on the turf so far.

Ray Dawson will be looking to weave his way through late over this six-furlong trip, with plenty of pace in the line up to set things up perfectly.

LONG SHOT:

Ripon – LORD PROTECTOR

Ruth Carr’s runners are nearly all well handicapped after a disappointing season last time around, and her six-year-old served notice that he would be winning soon when a cracking 66/1 second in the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar in May on soft ground.

A couple of lesser efforts on the all-weather since can be easily excused, and he will not mind at all if the forecast rain arrives ahead of his engagement at Ripon on Saturday.
