Shay Given's Carabao Cup Final Predictions
Ahead of the showpiece event, we asked CopyBet brand ambassador and former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, Shay Given for his thoughts on the game and some of his best bet selections.
Shay Given's Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle United
Sun 16 Mar, 16:30
Like any cup final, this is a big one for both sides. But for very different reasons. Liverpool have more than one hand on the Premier League trophy and have won numerous finals in recent years. However, that defeat to PSG in the Champions League in midweek will have hurt them and they'll be looking to bounce back immediately here.
For Newcastle, this is the chance to end 70 years without silverware and it's massive for the club and the city. As a former Newcastle player myself I know what it will mean to everyone connected to the club if they can lift the trophy on Sunday.
I think it's going to be a great game and neutrals will be hoping for another goalfest like it was when these two met at St James' Park back in December. It was 3-3 that day and Newcastle know they can give Liverpool a game if they are on it. Anthony Gordon was excellent that day and he'll be a big miss for the Magpies as he serves that suspension but they still have plenty of goal threats with the likes of Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes.
We all know the quality that Liverpool have and Mo Salah will no doubt have a big part to play on Sunday. If he's on form then he's very difficult to stop and with the attacking talent on display I think both teams will score. I can see it being a close game and it might even go to extra time. If it does, Newcastle having had the extra rest after not having a midweek game, could be the fresher of the sides. I'm actually backing the Toon Army to win in 90 minutes.
