Scott Thornton's Round of 16
12/1 Goals Acca
Germany were one of the most lethal sides going forward in the group stages. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala have proven difficult to contain. Niclas Füllkrug has also made a huge impact from the bench with his physical presence. Julian Nagelsmann’s side netted eight goals across their opening three matches. The German national team’s matches under the former Bayern boss have now seen ana average of three goals per game.
None of Denmark’s group games saw three goals or more but that could have easily been different. They created some good chances after going 1-0 down against England as they eventually drew. An early goal for the Germans would mean Kasper Hjulmand must roll the dice. These sides last went toe-to-toe at a major tournament back in 2012. Germany won 2-1.
Spain weren’t considered among the favourites to win the trophy ahead of the tournament but emerged from the group stages with plenty of admirers. They are the only team to win all three of their group games. Luis De La Fuente’s side accumulated an xG of 5.54 across their three matches, only Portugal, France and Croatia managed more.
They face a Georgia side that are full of confidence after beating Portugal 2-0. The lowest-ranked side at Euro 2024 also earned plenty of plaudits for their adventurous approach. They scored in all three of their group games. Their last 10 matches have seen an average of 3.4 goals. Willy Sagnol has the pace at his disposal to do some damage against Spain’s high defensive line so let’s hope they can contribute to the goal count.
Romania topped a group that included Belgium so they will be hopeful of edging past the Dutch here. just one of their matches in the group saw over 2.5 goals but taking advantage of the Netherlands’ defensive vulnerabilities could be the best course of action. Edward Iordanescu’s side looked at their most dangerous when they beat Ukraine 3-0. They were lethal on the counter in that clash and had to manage with just 29% possession. They will be hoping to have similar success here.
The Netherlands looked vulnerable against Austria as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. Over 2.5 goals also landed when they beat Poland 2-1. They did play out a goalless draw with France in the group stages but both teams seemed content with the draw in that one. Ronald Koeman’s side’s last 1o matches have seen an average of 3.1 goals.
Ralf Rangnick has transformed the Austrian national team and that culminated in them topping a group that included France and the Netherlands. Their willingness to commit bodies to the press has meant they’ve been difficult to play against, but they’ve also conceded plenty of chances. They have an xGA of 5.55 after the group stages, the third most at the tournament. Their last 10 matches have seen an average of 2.9 goals per game. Over 2.5 goals has won in their last two. Austria will be buoyed by the fact they beat Turkey 6-1 when the sides clashed in March.
Turkey have also afforded their opponents plenty of opportunities to score. Their xGA after three matches is 4.74, just behind Austria’s. There were at least three goals in all of their games in the group stages as they finished second behind Portugal. Turkey’s last 10 matches have seen an average of 3.2 goals.
