Course and distance specialist Pic D’orhy surely has everything in his favour to make it back-to-back victories in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase.
This 10-year-old has run four times over this course and distance, finishing second to Shishkin two years ago before reigning supreme over L’Homme Presse. He's also won at the CopyBet November Racing Weekend in the Copybet 1965 Chase just 84 days ago. He's been kept fresh for a repeat bid here, and the drying ground will suit him more than most.
I was really impressed by the performance of Derryhassen Paddy at Windsor last month, and he gets my vote in this Grade 2 despite carrying a penalty.
This six-year-old is unbeaten in his career to date, recording a P2P and Bumper victory before going into his Novice Hurdle campaign. He got off to the perfect start at Uttoxeter in November when staying on strongly over 2m4f to win well but stepped up in trip to 3m at Windsor last month he showed just how game he is - giving 4lbs and a beating to Honky Tonk Highway (129) in a close battle. He should love Haydock and can continue his sharp progression.
With Pertemps Qualifiers it is so often a case of who wants to win, and down towards the bottom of the weights is My Bobby Dazzler, who surely has a race like this in him off his current mark.
This Mel Rowley charge has won plenty of races down the years, but unequivocally his best form is shown on flat tracks - and Haydock is clearly a place he enjoys as last May he was only beaten a head by Zain Nights (128) off a mark of 121 in a 3m Class 2 Handicap. He's now only rated 2lbs higher having finished down the field in a 2m4f Handicap Hurdle on his seasonal reappearance in November, plus Toby Wynn.
