RBC Heritage golf betting tips: Cantlay could finally master Harbour Town
Our golf betting expert has picked out three players to consider in the outright market for this week’s PGA Tour tournament, the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Newly crowned Masters champion Rory McIlroy has decided to skip this week's PGA Tour event, the RBC Heritage, in the wake of his Augusta National triumph but a host of stars will tee it up at Harbour Town Golf Links in his absence.
World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, fourth at Augusta as defending champion, won the Heritage last year and is the favourite in his attempt to retain his title while Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele will all join him in the field at Hilton Head Island.
Harbour Town, a long-term PGA Tour venue which first hosted this event in 1969, is a tight, claustrophobic par-71 layout which measures 7,191 yards in total.
Accuracy tends to trump power at the South Carolina course and shorter hitters have thrived in the RBC Heritage over the years. Precise iron-play and sharp scrambling is also essential given the small green complexes.
Tip 1: The Heritage has grown in stature since it was granted Signature Event status in 2023 but Patrick Cantlay is one of the few elite names who has always been a regular at Harbour Town, a venue where he is immensely comfortable.
The Californian has made seven Heritage starts, registering form figures of 3-7-3-MC-2-3-3 since making his debut in 2017, and he is striking his ball well enough to be a factor again.
Cantlay has been a model of ball-striking consistency this year and while a 36th-place finish at the Masters was underwhelming, he would have finished a lot higher up the leaderboard if he had not dropped seven shots at the par-five 15th across the four rounds.
Harbour Town, a venue where he can plot his way around, is a more suitable assignment.
Tip 2: Russell Henley missed the cut at Augusta National last week after opening up with a 79 but the Georgia man battled back well on Friday, carding a 68, and he should be seen to better effect at Harbour Town.
Henley, a Signature Event winner at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month, has posted four PGA Tour top-10 finishes this year and he's returning to a venue where he was ninth in 2021, 19th in 2023 and 12th last season.
Tip 3: Bud Cauley did not qualify for the Masters and will be itching for this return to action as he aims to continue his fine run of PGA Tour results.
After a long battle back to the top after a horror car crash in 2018, Cauley has found top form in recent weeks, finishing sixth in an elite field at the Players Championship, fourth at the Valspar Championship and fifth in the Texas Open in his last three starts.
He is striking his irons beautifully and should go well again at Harbour Town, where he was ninth in 2017.
