Kelso – MONBEG GENIUS

The selection is being aimed at the Grand National and should have the legs of some of these older rivals. The good-jumping front-runner Aye Right has his chance to roll back the years, as does course lover Elvis Mail, who is a favourite around here. But I think now the weights are out for the National, the classy Monbeg Genius should be having their measure.

The eight-year-old was third in the Coral Gold Cup when last season, a race which is working out extremely well. He also ran a huge race last season in another hot race, The Ultima, at the Cheltenham Festival. The first that day was subsequent Grand National winner and Gold Cup bound, Corach Rambler. The second was Fastorslow, who is second favourite for the Gold Cup having won a Punchestown Gold Cup and won a John Durkan chase this season, beating Galopin Des Champs in the process.

The selection has form that stands out and that should see him home in front, all being well.

A grade one winner two starts back, he ran a solid race in defeat against a smart horse last time out. He won the former Tolworth, now run at Aintree. And three runs back he beat Tellherthename, who has since bolted up.

He has a penalty, but he can overcome that and show his class.

Kelso – UNDER CONTROL

A smart debut win at Newbury has seen the mare chucked into a grade two at the Cheltenham Festival. She easily won a grade three handicap next time out at Cheltenham’s April meeting. Then, she beat this seasons Greatwood Hurdle and Betfair Hurdle winner, Iberico Lord at Sandown. She didn’t show up in a grade three on her seasonal debut when sent off 9-4 favourite but showed a huge improvement in a grade two last time out against some talented mares, when she split grade one winners Ashroe Diamond and Gala Marceau.

Stainsby Girl was eight lengths off in that contest and has since won a listed race by 12 lengths. She’s a talented mare, with time on her side to keep on improving. This will be only her third run of the season, and there is also a bonus if she wins here and at the Cheltenham Festival, something connections may have eyed up.
