Epsom – CHIC COLOMBINE

Operating at a healthy 26%, with nine winners in the last fortnight, the in-form George Boughey has a live chance in this Group three with Chic Colombine. There are three fillies rated higher in here, but only by a couple of pounds, and she doesn’t have much to find on form. She won four in a row last season, the last of those wins at Goodwood, also an undulating track she handles well. She ended her first season in the Group three “Oh So Sharp Stakes”. She ran credible, having been hampered and slow away. The three ahead of her have all been tried at the highest level this season and their recent runs.

She returned in March with a very smooth and easy win, by six lengths, in a heavy ground Listed French race. Then her last run seen her take on the top level, in the Grade one Pouliches. The field was littered with graded winners, and the horse that finished upsides Chic Colombine was Folgaria, who had beaten the English 1000 Guineas winner previously. She was beaten five lengths in a Grade one, behind good horses.

She now drops back in class, and the rain and forecast ground will suit, but having won on good and heavy, she is adaptable and somewhat overlooked in the current market.

Epsom – DREAM COMPOSER

Having won off a mark of 96 last season, Dream Composer comes here off a mark of 89, and also gets five pounds off with Joe Leavy’s claim. Although he’s never been to Epsom, he’s won at Goodwood, Sandown and Ascot, three good testing tracks. He’s often played late, which might suit this fiver furlong “Dash”.

He looks like coming to hand, three runs back he finished close up on heavy ground at Goodwood, beaten half a length and one place better than York winner and one of the market leaders for this race, Clarendon House.

His latest run seen him go down by a neck after staying on strongly on good ground. He’s another ground versatile horse, who can handle whichever way the weather changes. I think he’s overpriced and well-handicapped, and worth an each-way play to come good once again.

Epsom – ROYAL SCOTSMAN

Having contested Grade one’s in his last five runs, this is a big class drop for this talented colt. He bolted up second run of his career at Goodwood, before running a close third in the Coventry of 2022 when beaten by the talented, Bradsell, with the likes of Blackbeard in behind.

He then won the Group two Richmond and ended with a head second in the Group one Dewhurst behind Guineas winner, Chaldean. He contacted that 2000 Guineas when third behind Chaldean, staying on well over the mile. He has disappointed since, but as mentioned that has all been in top company.

He’s had his seasonal debut run to blow away the cobwebs, and his yard are very much in form. Here’s hoping he can get back to winning ways in this lesser contest.
