England have made a smooth transition to life after Gareth Southgate. A pair of 2-0 wins, in Ireland and against Finland at Wembley have made for the perfect start to the Three Lions UEFA Nations League campaign. Also making for a 100% record for interim Head Coach Lee Carsley as he aims to persuade the FA, he is the right man to lead the country on a permanent basis.
Greece top Group 2 having scored one more goal in their own wins-to-nil over the Irish and Finns, but this is a big step up in class. A total of 44 places separates these two nations in FIFA’s World ranking so expect England’s strong home form, especially against lesser nations to continue here.
This is a long shot, but I feel Slovenia have been massively disrespected in the market here against a Norway team who often seem to disappoint. Only four places separate these two nations in the FIFA World rankings, and Matjaž Kek’s men have lost only one of their last 18 internationals winning half of those fixtures. In Benjamin Šeško they have one of Europe’s hottest striking talents. He already has four goals in this competition and three Champions League goals for RB Leipzig this season whilst scoring nine times in his last eight appearances for club and country.
At the other end of the pitch is Jan Oblak, one of the most consistent and respected goalkeepers in World football. His duel with Erling Haaland could be key here but if both Slovenians play to their capabilities this price could look huge come the final whistle in Oslo.
It amazes me to find Bosnia & Herzegovina rubbing shoulders with the elite of European football in League A of the Nations League. Ranked 75 by FIFA, Sergej Barbarez’s men are sandwiched in between Bahrain and Montenegro in that list. It is something of a leap of faith to give the 53-year-old his first crack at management. After opening his tenure with three successive losses, he avoided defeat for the first time against Hungary last time out. A 5-2 hammering by Netherlands prior to that illustrates the uphill task to extend that unbeaten run here against a strong German side.
The loss of Kai Havertz with a knee injury is a blow to Julian Nagelsmann especially with Jamal Musiala having already withdrawn. However, the likes of Deniz Undav, Serge Gnabry and an in-form Florian Wirtz will see this as a great opportunity to give their stats a big boost at international level.
