Burnley’s 2-1 victory over Norwich on Friday night, combined with a third consecutive defeat for Sheffield United on Saturday lunchtime, means the Clarets could mathematically rubber-stamp promotion this Easter Weekend.
If Scott Parker’s side can better the Blades’ result, they can finish the job by merely avoiding defeat against them on Easter Monday – alternatively, they’d need to win to finish the job that day if they either match their Friday result or see their lead decrease by one point.
Simply, Burnley must keep their automatic promotion rivals at arm’s length across the weekend, to remain in the driving seat. For a team that’s conceded a mere 13 goals all season, keeping teams at arm’s length is very much their speciality.
With James Trafford starring in goal, and reportedly set for a summer move to Newcastle, the East Lancashire outfit should have the defensive mettle to win at Watford, who have taken the fourth-fewest points in the Championship in 2025.
Wrexham have stamped their dominance at home this season, winning 15 of their 21 league encounters at STōK Cae Ras.
The Red Dragons have a strong spine, boasting a great shot-stopper in Arthur Okonkwo, a rock-solid rear-guard including the talents of Max Cleworth and Lewis Brunt, an industrious midfield, and match-winners at the sharp end in Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez.
With a variety of options in the attacking wing-back areas, too, Phil Parkinson’s side have taken League One by storm in their first season up, with their financial resources proving crucial.
That template should be enough to see off a plummeting Bristol Rovers side, who secured back-to-back home wins in March over play-off candidates Huddersfield and Bolton but then lost six on the spin to drop in the relegation zone.
Crewe go into the Easter Weekend five points and four places off the play-offs, needing at least 10 points from their remaining four games to stand a realistic chance of a top seven berth.
Lee Bell’s side, though, aren’t approaching the business end of the season in good form, having won just one of their last eight. In fact, it’s been nearly relegation form from them since mid-January.
Whereas the Alex have almost got worse as the season has gone on, hosts Colchester seem to have got better, having been 21st in November, but soaring to their current position of 8th with 51 points from 27 games – the most points accrued in League Two in that timeframe.
Danny Cowley’s side have benefited from star contributions from JJ McDonnell in midfield, and Owura Edwards on the wing – a win would put them in the top seven on Friday night, if Grimsby fail to beat Swindon.
